The Saeima will vote to create yet another parliamentary investigative commission — this time on the issue of immigration.

Let us remind you that a couple of weeks ago, another investigative commission appeared in the Saeima — to investigate the circumstances of the increase in heating tariffs by the company "Rigas Siltums," and today, during the break between the plenary session, the first meeting of this commission will take place — the deputies are to elect the leaders of the investigative commission, namely the chairperson and the secretary.

At today’s plenary session, the deputies will approve the creation of yet another investigative commission — this time to investigate the causes and consequences of the influx of immigrants from third countries into Latvia.

The initiators of the parliamentary investigation note that "since 2015, the number of citizens from third countries residing in Latvia with temporary or permanent residence permits has significantly increased — over 105,000. In addition, there is an indefinite number of individuals in the country who are using visas and travel documents issued in other EU countries."

This is all very interesting, but it is unclear how the parliamentary investigative commission intends to tackle this reality. The Saeima deputies have virtually no ability to influence the overall migration policy of the EU. As for Latvian legislation, a new Immigration Law is currently being considered in the Saeima.

In any case, the signatures for the creation of the commission have been collected, and it seems that Janis Dombrava (National Alliance) will lead the commission — this will ensure him additional popularity ahead of the elections and a pay increase.
