Recent discussions on the peace plan for Ukraine do not give cause for concern regarding possible negative impacts on the security situation in the Baltic region, believes the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, writes LETA.

In recent days, the proposed peace plan by the United States has been actively discussed, with the first version perceived in Europe as extremely unfavorable for Ukraine and clearly aimed at satisfying Russia's interests. In this regard, politicians in the region are working on adjusting the plan.

According to media reports, the initial draft of the plan included provisions for a non-aggression pact between Russia, Ukraine, and Europe, the recognition of disputes that have arisen over the past 30 years as settled, Russia's commitment not to attack neighboring countries, NATO's promise not to expand, as well as a gradual discussion on lifting sanctions imposed against Russia, inviting Russia to rejoin the G8 group of countries, and other provisions related not only to the war in Ukraine but also to the security situation in Europe as a whole.

Rinkēvičs stated on Wednesday after a meeting with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) that officials discussed the peace negotiation process. The President noted that the parties exchanged information on both the position of the coalition of goodwill and contacts at various levels with allies and Ukraine. He emphasized that the situation is dynamic and developing rapidly.

According to the politician, Northern Europe, the Baltic states, and European partners are focused on adhering to key principles in the negotiations — the territorial integrity of Ukraine, its sovereignty, and essential security interests. Rinkēvičs pointed out that a new version has already emerged from the draft plan discussed last week, and negotiations are ongoing.

He stated that the main goal is to ensure that the negotiation process upholds the three mentioned fundamental principles. Rinkēvičs acknowledged that the incoming information is encouraging, but emphasized that alongside the dialogue between Ukraine and the United States and work within the European Union, it is important to understand whether Russia is interested in a ceasefire or a peace agreement. "I have not yet seen such interest," said the president, adding that the United States continues its dialogue with Russia.

Rinkēvičs believes that it is "not the time to speculate" on what the outcome of the process may be.

The president stated that Latvia, where possible, expresses its position on the necessity of considering Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security interests in the negotiations. He also noted that at this moment, no one can predict how diplomatic and political processes will unfold over the week.

"Let us hope that a just and sustainable peace can be achieved, but this requires not only a decision from the Ukrainians — ultimately, it is also a question for Russia," said Rinkēvičs.
