In any scenario of a possible agreement, Ukraine must have the ability to independently make a decision on the peace treaty, whatever it may be, stated Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže to reporters on Monday upon arriving in Brussels for a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on common trade policy.

The Latvian politician noted that the position of Latvia and its allies has been clear from the very beginning: the proposal for a ceasefire has been "on the negotiating table" since March, however, between the outcome on the battlefield and the achievement of a peace treaty "stands only one person" - the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

The minister emphasized that it is the "butcher in the Kremlin" who is currently the obstacle between U.S. President Donald Trump and peace, as well as any decision supported by the European Union. Braže stressed that the issue is not about Ukraine, the EU, or allies, but about Russia, which is currently unwilling to agree to any terms.

As reported, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that his 28-point plan to end the war in Ukraine, under which Ukraine would cede part of its territory, reduce its army, and commit to never joining NATO, is not a final proposal and that he "hopes, one way or another," that fighting will cease.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted cautiously to this plan, stating that he would propose "alternatives."

Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated that he is ready to discuss the details of the plan, and if Kyiv rejects it, Moscow will continue the offensive that began in February 2022.
