The leaders of the Baltic countries - including the leaders of Latvia - and the Nordic countries confirmed their commitment to further arm Ukraine and strengthen Europe's defense capabilities.
The leaders of the Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8) have confirmed their commitment to further arm Ukraine and strengthen Europe's defense capabilities, according to a joint statement from NB8.
The leaders held talks on Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "We have supported Ukraine from the very beginning of Russia's full-scale aggression and will continue this support. Our conviction is based on the understanding that this is not only about Ukraine's security but also about the security of all of Europe," the statement emphasizes.
As noted in the document, Ukraine consistently demonstrates a desire for peace. The NB8 leaders praised President Zelensky's efforts to help the country navigate this extremely challenging period. "Ukraine remains open to negotiations and, as President Zelensky stated, is working on a document prepared by the United States. Russia, however, has yet to commit to observing a ceasefire or taking steps that could lead to peace. On the contrary, Russia continues to launch brutal strikes against the civilian population of Ukraine and its infrastructure," the document states.
The leaders of the Baltic and Nordic countries stated that they would support decisions that respect Ukraine's sovereignty and contribute to strengthening security and stability for both Ukraine and Europe.
"We will continue supplying arms to Ukraine and strengthening Europe's defense to deter further Russian aggression. As long as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, we will advocate for increased sanctions and expanded economic pressure measures," the NB8 leaders stated.
"We want you to know: you are not alone and can count on our support," the leaders said, addressing the people of Ukraine.
The NB8 countries - Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland - have been providing military, financial, and practical support to Ukraine since the very beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and the security of all of Europe.
