The leader of the new nationalist party commented on the peace plan proposed by the U.S. president.
Raimonds Zeltiņš, the leader of the recently established nationalist party Austošā saule in Latvia, commented on Donald Trump's peace plan on social media: "I consider the peace proposals put forward by the United States unacceptable, as they reward the aggressor country, which does not adhere to any agreements, with territories, forgive unforgivable crimes, demand disproportionate guarantees from Ukraine without requiring them from the aggressor country. The Austošā saule party emphasizes that the most immediate threat to the existence of the Latvian and Latvian people is Russian imperialism. Russia must change its political and ideological course, return the occupied territories, acknowledge the committed crimes, take full responsibility for them, and cease any aggression against neighboring countries. We must support Ukraine's membership in NATO.
However, instead of directing anger at the United States, I would urge looking at the actions of our own government to understand that this anger across the ocean may appear hypocritical. In the past, the Austošā saule society protested against Russian monuments and cultural centers in Latvia, the presence of Russian citizens in Latvian institutions, as well as against trade between Latvia and Russia. We can be outraged by U.S. policies as much as we want, but the facts are that our government, part of the "European values space," is trading with an aggressor country — in Latvia, for the first 9 months of this year, the total value of goods imported from Russia and Belarus amounted to 146,779,000 euros, while exports totaled 828,282,000 euros (data from the Central Statistical Bureau). Meanwhile, the volume of exports is growing — so that Medvedev always has enough champagne."
