The Latvian Border Zone is Soviet Latvia, - Zemessardze Officer

Sabotage and provocations carried out by Russia against Western countries are becoming increasingly persistent and covert, and they do not always originate directly from the Kremlin — often they are implemented with the help of internal agents, said Major NVS, Zemessardze staff officer Janis Slaidins in the TV24 program “Current Affairs on Military Actions in Ukraine,” writes LA.lv.

“We see that these drones appearing near military bases are not directly from Russia — there is internal agency work behind all of this. The same goes for arsons and various diversions aimed against the West — there is a Russian trace in all of this,” he said.

Slaidins pointed out that, although there are no direct attempts at Russian diversion in Latvia and Estonia, supporters of Russia are still among us.

“Stirring is already happening. It is clear that our security agencies are currently working to prevent any actions, but they have not gone anywhere — they are still here,” Slaidins noted.

He is particularly concerned about the Latvian border region, where nostalgia for the Soviet Union and the idea of friendship with Russia as the only path for development are still alive.

“Last year I traveled along the border. There it is still — Soviet Latvia. No matter how much our politicians try to deny it, the Latvian border zone is Soviet Latvia. People there believe that they need to be friends with Russia, they do not know the Latvian language, they have no jobs, and they see development and improvements only in cooperation with Russia,” admitted Major NVS.
