Should nuclear weapons be considered as a means of deterrence in the context of the defense of small countries, such as the Baltic states? The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, acknowledged on TV24 that there is a trend in the world towards the destruction of previous self-evident things and the emergence of new processes, and more countries will develop nuclear weapons, writes nra.lv.
The head of state stated that Latvia is part of a larger alliance that includes three nuclear powers — the USA, the UK, and France, and there exists a so-called common nuclear umbrella.
Rinkēvičs noted that he is aware of discussions regarding whether we need our own nuclear weapons — this is a question that requires significant resources and technologies. "This is such rhetoric," the president said.
If we see that the rhetoric of nuclear weapons testing and blackmail using nuclear escalation continues in the world, the president of Latvia admits that more countries in the world will strive to develop their own nuclear weapons. Such countries already exist — for example, India, Pakistan, and North Korea.
