The Memorandum Council has hit a dead end. Could it be named more simply?

The Memorandum Council for cooperation between non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the Cabinet of Ministers has hit a dead end and has not yet made a decision on the candidate for the position of a member of the Council of Public Electronic Media (CPEM), said Georg Rubenis, the deputy head of the council, to the LETA agency.

Last week, the Saeima rejected the second candidate nominated by the Memorandum Council for the position of a member of the Council of Public Electronic Media (CPEM) - this time the deputies did not support Janis Siksnis.

Rubenis, who also chaired the CPEM selection committee, emphasized that the competition organized by the Memorandum Council was open, and all procedures were transparent. In addition, the committee included representatives from three media organizations. "So it was not just an assessment by NGOs or the State Chancellery. There is now a feeling that we have hit a dead end," Rubenis noted.

A meeting of the Memorandum Council is scheduled for next week. Rubenis hopes that after it, there will be more clarity on how to proceed.

The law on public electronic media and their management does not require a competition for the position of a member of the CPEM; however, the Memorandum Council decided to select a candidate on a competitive basis back in 2021 when the need arose to nominate candidates for work in the CPEM for the first time.

As reported, on November 13, the majority of Saeima deputies did not support the approval of Siksnis as a member of the CPEM - this is already the second candidate nominated by the NGO Council and the Cabinet of Ministers for cooperation that the parliament has rejected.
