"We are not afraid and are ready to defend Western values," stated the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Miereņa, at the opening of the Baltic Assembly.
As reported by the parliament's press service, Miereņa emphasized in her speech that for centuries the Baltic states have stood side by side as brotherly nations. "We have always been together in the most difficult times as a strong pillar. Since the restoration of independence, we have made an incredible breakthrough and achieved positive transformation in the economy, development, and orientation towards Western values," the speaker noted.
She emphasized that today it is the Baltic states that stand guard in the European Union and NATO, setting an example for others. "We uphold the ideas and values of the West, which the aggressor is trying to eradicate with its barbaric war in Ukraine," Miereņa stated.
The Speaker of the Saeima reminded about the NATO summit in The Hague, where an agreement was reached to allocate 5% of gross domestic product for security and defense needs. "Together with Poland, the Baltic states will be the first to achieve these goals," Miereņa said.
She emphasized that the potential for trilateral cooperation among the Baltic states is far from exhausted. Their common tasks in the coming years are related to the development of major infrastructure projects, attracting additional funding, as well as further internal integration of the Baltics.
