MEP Vilis Kristopans on the protests and the struggle for values.

I am absolutely convinced that values are very important for both rational Latvians and Europeans in general! For most normal people, traditional values are important — family, as a union of a man and a woman, children, as continuators of the lineage. This is all very important, and now we, supporters of these Christian values, must fend off the attack from the liberals, from the supporters of the LGBT community,” said MEP Vilis Kristopans from the "Patriots of Europe" group.

— As is known, at the initiative of the President of Latvia, the consideration of the bill to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention has been postponed for a year. Does this mean that the topic is closed?

— I would like to remind you that 6 countries in the Council of Europe, including Lithuania, did not join the convention. So, Latvia, if it were to withdraw from the convention, would not be in proud solitude, as the supporters of this convention tried to assure us. I personally believe that our country will sooner or later withdraw from this convention. Firstly, because protecting women in Latvia and in Europe as a whole can be done without any Istanbul Convention — there are corresponding norms in national legislation for this. Secondly, the convention is not so much aimed at protecting women as it is at supporting the LGBT community. It is no coincidence that it was the activists of these sexual minority organizations who were the first to protest against the bill — it is clear that their actions are in no way related to caring for women or opposing violence. It’s very simple: the Istanbul Convention opened the way for them to grants, it’s all related to financial issues!

The European Commission allocated about 3.6 billion euros to NGOs in the EU that support or represent the interests of the LGBT community! As you can understand, there is much for these organizations to fight for! That is why they reacted so hysterically to the bill to withdraw from the convention!

Of course, among the protesters were those who were simply deceived, as huge funds were thrown into the "propaganda" of the convention and discrediting those who supported the bill to withdraw from the convention, and all major media resources were involved!

I have repeatedly stated, including in the pages of your publication, that there is a very fierce struggle for values in the European Union. If we, supporters of conservative, traditional values, lose, then those who support all this nonsense about multiple genders, about "socially constructed gender" will come to power!

That is why it is so important to achieve the inclusion of a separate amendment in the Constitution stating that the state recognizes only two genders — male and female, and marriage is a union of a man and a woman.

— As is known, foreign investors working in Latvia have also opposed the withdrawal from the convention

— I see no connection between withdrawing from the convention and attracting investments. I would like to remind you that Trump, right after his inauguration, cleared the army of LGBT activists, but this in no way hindered the influx of investments into the country. Investors have invested billions of dollars into the American economy in recent months — for example, German automakers are preparing to move their production to the USA, believing that it is more profitable to produce cars in America!

Those who actively fought against the bill would have been better off directing their efforts and energy towards developing the economy. Look: in Estonia, the external debt is twice as low as in Latvia, yet teachers' salaries there are twice as high! Estonia allocated an additional 800 million for defense and security, while we allocated only 300 million! We have a catastrophe in the economy, external debt is rapidly growing, and we are already paying 1 million euros a day to service this debt, and soon we will be paying 2 million a day! But instead of solving these problems, liberals and leftists have been frightening the people for weeks with "terrible consequences" of Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

— Another relevant international news — in New York, the communist Zokhran Mamdani won the mayoral election. What do you think will be the consequences for this metropolis and for the USA as a whole?

— Someone, without understanding the situation, has already rushed to claim that this is almost a defeat for Trump, although these are just local elections. I am generally amazed by certain commentators who have never been to America, do not know this country, but make some profound conclusions. I spoke these days with my acquaintances in New York and found out that the organizers of Mamdani's campaign were giving each resident of the city 200 dollars, plus feeding the homeless, and, coincidentally, it was precisely the homeless who actively voted for this mayoral candidate. Of course, we will see how he will manage New York, but it seems that this city is already lost…
