The Power Elite Felt Threatened and Began to Act 0 8

As is known, recently a very large protest (about 10,000 people) took place in Dome Square against attempts to make a decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention. Politicians from 'New Unity' and the 'Progressives' party not only supported the protesters but also actively participated in the event themselves.

Psychotherapist and public figure Neil Konstantinov, in a discussion with political scientist Jurgis Liepnieks on a YouTube channel, expressed his version of such mass mobilization of a part of Latvian society.

"The power elites felt a real threat for the first time. They realized that the stars could align in such a way that they could simply be replaced - against the backdrop of this Istanbul Convention, an alternative to the current power began to form.

And the authorities responded - they showed all their might, all resources were engaged. A whole, powerful campaign was launched, in which state media participated very actively. Representatives of the National Armed Forces were even invited to the broadcast. They appeared on air in military uniform and explained to us how to properly read this convention, in case anyone still didn't understand!"
