About 80 officials of municipalities have received access to state secrets

Access to state secrets for the performance of official duties has been granted to about 80 officials of municipalities, reported the Minister of Smart Governance and Regional Development Raimonds Čudars on the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama."

According to the minister, the verification of officials in about 30 municipalities regarding their access to state secrets is still ongoing.

The minister emphasized that those chairpersons of councils who have been denied access to state secrets cannot perform their official duties, despite the possibility of appealing the denial decision.

Commenting on the situation in Jūrmala, whose mayor Gatis Truksnis announced his resignation last week due to the denial of access to state secrets, Čudars noted that the council members now have to elect a new mayor.

As for the chairman of the Ogre region council, Egils Helmanis, who has not yet even submitted a request for access to state secrets and is currently not working temporarily, Čudars confirmed that the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development has received assurance from the municipality that as soon as Helmanis returns to work, he will submit the appropriate application.
