It can be predicted that the Saeima will vote for the adoption of the "dangerous" bill late into the evening.
Opponents of Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention - the deputies of "New Unity" and "Progressives" - are debating each of their amendments to the bill on withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention for a long time. Moreover, all amendments are aimed at effectively disavowing the bill, making it useless. As was the case a week ago, the deputies of "New Unity" and "Progressives" are trying to accuse supporters of withdrawing from the convention of being pawns of Russia and victims of Russian propaganda. There are also speeches claiming that withdrawal from the convention threatens Latvia's security.
"How can we enter history? We can enter history as Latvia becoming the first country in the European Union to withdraw from this convention. This will make us enter history!
And I would like to answer another question that is often raised. Are all those speaking against the convention Putinists? No. Most are indeed not Putinists. No, there are some here – there is no doubt about that. But not the majority. A significant part are even patriots who do a lot of good for Latvia in their daily lives and want only the best for Latvia. But unfortunately, they do not realize that they have fallen for the cunning hook of Russian propaganda. Russian propaganda is very insidious and is successfully constructed to divide society on any issue, on any possible issue," stated deputy Gatis Liepiņš from "New Unity" from the podium.
Debates on the convention issue have been ongoing in the Saeima for over five hours. Periodically, the people's servants forget the regulations and start to "talk to the hall" from the parliamentary podium, which is prohibited. However, deputies react quite sharply to the remarks of the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mierina. For example, deputy Uģis Rotbergs sharply retorted to the Speaker's remark: "Don't interrupt me!"
