This year, four voters in the Jelgava region municipal elections were bribed with alcohol and cash, the LETA agency found out.
As reported, on October 1, the Security Police (SP) handed over to the prosecutor's office for criminal prosecution a criminal case against a citizen of Latvia for bribing voters in this year's municipal elections in one of the parishes of the Jelgava region.
According to the indictment, this person influenced the will of four voters through bribery, that is, he gave alcohol to three voters and cash to one.
The accused was not a candidate for deputy himself but is a relative of a candidate for deputy.
The accused was served with the indictment this week.
The prosecutor's office did not disclose which list the voter bribery occurred under. "The legislator has established criminal liability for illegal intentional obstruction of the free choice of a voter, regardless of which party the affected voters voted for. Thus, the question of the involvement of any political party in this crime is not decisive, does not affect the course of the criminal proceedings, and is not subject to further comment," the prosecutor's office stated.
The individual organized the transport of voters to the polling station in his personal vehicle.
