The «No Parties» Movement Wants to Participate in Next Year«s Saeima Elections, How Is This Possible?

The political movement 'No Parties' plans to participate in next year's Saeima elections, announced a representative of the movement, Saeima deputy Didzis Schmitz.

Entrepreneur Armand Broks told the LETA agency that it is still too early to say whether the movement will participate in the Saeima elections. According to him, it is necessary to understand what the people's reaction will be. At the same time, he did not rule out cooperation with other parties, stating that such negotiations are ongoing, but it is also too early to talk about this.

The law stipulates that a list of candidates for the elections can be submitted by a political party registered in accordance with the law and established no later than one year before the parliamentary elections. This means that the new movement must start on the basis of an already existing party.

Schmitz linked his motivation to join the movement to the fact that "without changing the system, it is impossible to achieve a different, better result." He noted that in the last three parliamentary terms, the rotation of deputies has been significant, but the "intellectual potential of the parliament," in his opinion, has been declining since the times of the Supreme Council.

He noted that he does not believe that changing the electoral system automatically guarantees a quality result, but it opens the way to such a result.

The establishment of the 'No Parties' movement was announced by director Alvis Hermanis, entrepreneur Broks, politician Schmitz, pastor Peteris Sprogis, and economist Guntars Vitols. Its main goal is to change the electoral system and transition from party lists to elections of individual candidates.
