The Union of Greens and Farmers says one thing and does another - Prime Minister

Evaluating the actions of the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF), one must consider the risks: what they say is one thing, and what they do is quite another, stated Prime Minister Evika Silina ("New Unity") in an interview for the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama," LETA reports.

Characterizing the stability of the government and the decision of the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF) to join opposition parties in advocating for the rejection of the Istanbul Convention, Silina expressed the opinion that regardless of the motives that guided the UGF in voting for the convention, changing its position undermines trust in politicians.

The Prime Minister is not sure how stable the government is.

"I asked the UGF if they would vote for the budget and if they want to continue working in this government. They said they want the budget and for the government to work. But, evaluating the actions, of course, one must consider the risks: what they say is one thing, what they do is another," Silina said.

She promised to do everything to avoid escalating disputes among government partners and to promote stability. However, the pre-election period has already begun, and each party is making its choice. The politician once again emphasized that there is currently a political theater on the political stage, the goal of which is to split the government so that the opposition comes to power.

In Silina's opinion, the government has managed to develop a sufficiently good budget that includes many positive aspects. According to her, the opposition envies this, as the adoption of such a budget is not beneficial for them.

As previously reported, at the end of September, due to the UGF's vote in the Saeima for the denunciation of the Istanbul Convention, clear instability began within the government coalition.

Nevertheless, coalition partners have expressed their readiness to work on adopting a "security budget" for the next year. The Prime Minister stated that the UGF, which is part of the coalition, violated the coalition agreement with its vote for the denunciation of the Istanbul Convention.

"New Unity" has 25 deputies in the Saeima, the UGF faction has 16 deputies, and the "Progressives" have eight. The "United List" has 13 deputies, the National Alliance has 12, and both "Latvia First" and "Stability" have eight each. Additionally, there are 10 non-attached deputies in the Saeima, some of whom support the ruling coalition.
