«The Istanbul Convention is no longer needed.» The MP explained why he supports Latvia«s withdrawal from the convention

Uldis Augulis believes that the attached declaration is not being upheld.

Member of the Saeima, former Minister of Welfare Uldis Augulis, explained in an interview with TV-24 why he and his colleagues from the Union of Greens and Farmers advocated for Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

"Almost two years ago, during the ratification of the convention, we attached a declaration that outlined important principles for us - views on family, on marriage. The declaration also contained references to the Constitution. We see that the declaration is not being upheld. The supporters of the convention defend completely different values. This is evident from the pickets near the Saeima - among the picketers, there are no victims of violence," noted the parliamentarian.

The MP pointed out that the European Union has adopted directives on preventing violence against women. Based on this directive, changes were made to Latvian legislation. In other words, the Istanbul Convention is completely unnecessary; it only divides society," Uldis Augulis believes.
