If the government cannot work, it should make way for someone else - Rinkēvičs

If the current government cannot work, then perhaps it needs to make way for someone else, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, who met with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa at the Riga Castle on Wednesday.

In his opinion, the government and the members of the Saeima should refrain from sharp rhetoric and focus on important issues - security, demographics, healthcare, and education.

"I would urge everyone to refrain from sharp rhetoric, which occasionally sounds in both the parliament and the government, and to concentrate on security issues. We have a lot to do in this direction," said Rinkēvičs.

He emphasized that the assessment of the government's work will largely be linked to the budget for the next year, which the Cabinet of Ministers will submit to the parliament next week. The way discussions unfold and the final decision on the adoption of the budget will show the willingness or unwillingness of the government parties to work together.

The president noted that it is important to maintain the commitment to increase defense spending in accordance with the NATO summit decision, as well as to focus on demographics, education, and healthcare. He also warned that the national debt cannot grow indefinitely and reminded that the deficit of public spending is already high.

Rinkēvičs also stated that he sees no reason for urgent consultations regarding the government's work, as he recently met with all parliamentary factions, as well as with the speaker and the prime minister.

"We are not in a situation where we need to watch a drama every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday on issues that are not always clear to the public," added the president.
