“Can I drink non-alcoholic beer if I had a stomach ulcer?” asks one of the viewers on the TV24 program “On the Line.”

“Why not? It’s possible. But you see, beer has one other big problem — it contains quite a lot of calories, and if a lady is overweight, she probably shouldn’t consume calorie-rich drinks,” says Anatolijs Danilans, a gastroenterologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences.

He explains that non-alcoholic beer stimulates appetite.

“If you are weak and thin and need to gain weight, then you can have some beer, but in Latvia, there are many overweight people who think that they won’t get so many calories from beer. “Professor, I’m treating myself with beer,” he quotes one patient.

“Your belly is hanging out, what kind of treatment is that? Yes, there’s no alcohol in non-alcoholic beer, but there are calories!” warns the gastroenterologist.
