People remember old prices, so it seems to them that they are not changing or that products continue to rise in price; however, this is not the case. This was stated on the air of TV24 by the president of the Latvian Association of Traders, Henrik Danusevich. He also promised that soon residents will be able to buy a number of products at a lower price.
“Currently, there are positive signals in the food sector for almost all products. For example, prices for bread and flour have decreased by 10%, for milk by 15%, for cheese by 20%, and for eggs by 15%. The decrease in pork prices was the smallest — only 5%, while beef prices have dropped by 30–40%. Lamb has not become cheaper, but it is not very popular,” explained Danusevich.
Continuing to list changes in the food basket, he noted: “Speaking of vegetables, prices for tomatoes have decreased by 20%, for cabbage by 50%, and only potatoes have become more expensive.”
Danusevich also shared good news: due to the reduction of the VAT rate starting July 1, several other products will become cheaper. This will affect chicken meat, bakery products (except for buns), eggs, and some other goods.
However, as Danusevich emphasized, “this will be felt by those who buy fresh products, while the reduced rate will not apply to processed products. For example, if a person buys fresh chicken, the reduced VAT will apply to it. But if they buy chicken sausages or sausage, the reduced VAT will not apply to such products.”
As reported by Bb.lv, the government promises new measures to reduce the cost of the food basket.
