After several warm days, the water in a number of rivers and lakes in Latvia has reached a comfortable temperature for swimming. The warmest remains the Lielupe, while the sea is still noticeably lagging behind.
The water bodies of Latvia continue to warm up quickly, and in some places, the water temperature has already reached +20 degrees.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the warmest water early on Wednesday morning was in the Lielupe River at Mežotne and Staļģene, where +20 degrees was recorded.
In other sections of the Lielupe, as well as in the Venta River, the water temperature ranges from +18 to +19 degrees. In the small rivers of Zemgale and Kurzeme, the water has warmed up to +15...+18 degrees.
In the Daugava River, the water temperature reaches +15...+18 degrees. In Aiviekste, Ogre, Salacgrīva, and in certain sections of the Gauja River, it remains around +17 degrees.
In lakes and reservoirs, the water has now warmed up to +14...+19 degrees, which already allows many swimming enthusiasts to open the full swimming season.
The most noticeable difference remains between the inland water bodies and the sea. Along the coast, the water is still significantly colder — from +10 to +15 degrees.
For the residents of Riga, the most comfortable conditions are currently observed not on the seaside beaches, but in the inland water bodies. According to the municipal police, on Tuesday, the water temperature in Lake Babīte reached +18 degrees, and in the Bolderāja quarry — +19 degrees.
On the beaches of Daugavgrīva and Vakarbuļļi, the water was cooler — around +14 degrees.
Along the Kurzeme coast, the sea remains spring-like cold. On Tuesday, the water temperature near Ventspils was about +10 degrees, in Liepāja — +12 degrees. In the Bulduri area of Jūrmala, the water warmed up to about +13 degrees.
For those planning their first summer swims, the rivers, quarries, and lakes remain the most comfortable options right now. Despite the warm weather, the sea water will warm up noticeably slower.
If the current sunny and warm weather persists, the water temperature in many inland water bodies may exceed +20 degrees in the coming days.
