Early in the morning, a warning was issued in Alūksne Municipality about a possible threat to the airspace. A few hours later, authorities reported that the danger had passed.
The warning issued on Wednesday morning about a possible threat to the airspace in Alūksne Municipality has been lifted. Information about the cancellation of the alarm was disseminated via the Cell Broadcast system and published on the 112.lv portal.
Around five o'clock in the morning, the National Armed Forces alerted residents of the region about the risk of a potential incident in the airspace. The population was not required to take any additional actions. NATO mission fighter jets were deployed to respond to the situation, patrolling the airspace of the Baltic states.
Such notifications have become common for residents of border areas. In recent months, Latvia has activated its emergency notification system several times due to the possible presence of drones near the border.
Simultaneously, warnings were also issued in Estonia. Initially, they concerned the western and northeastern regions of the country, but were later expanded to several counties in the southern and central parts of Estonia. Local residents were advised to seek shelter in case drones were spotted.
The National Armed Forces emphasize that Latvia's airspace is monitored around the clock in cooperation with NATO allies. Additionally, air defense units have been reinforced along the eastern border.
It is important to understand that such warnings do not automatically indicate a threat over populated areas. They allow for the rapid informing of residents about potentially dangerous situations and enable quick responses to changes in the situation if necessary.
In May, similar alerts were repeatedly received by residents of Latgale and Vidzeme. At that time, the cause was drones associated with Russia's war against Ukraine that approached or crossed the airspace of Latvia.
Several drones fell in the region, and one drone over Estonia was destroyed by a NATO fighter jet.
After today's incident, authorities reported that the possible threat to the airspace in Alūksne Municipality has been eliminated and the situation is under control.
