On Tuesday morning, alarm sirens will sound simultaneously across Latvia and test messages will be sent to mobile phones. The test is being conducted to assess the operation of the early warning system for the population in emergency situations.
Residents of Latvia will face a large-scale test of the alert systems today.
According to the State Fire and Rescue Service, from 10:00 to 10:10, a test of the national early warning system will take place across the country.
As part of the test, alarm sirens will sound for three minutes.
At the same time, special messages will be sent to residents' mobile phones through the cellular broadcasting system, explaining that this is indeed a test.
This will be one of the largest tests of the alert system in recent times. Previously, similar messages were usually sent only to residents of specific areas where there was a potential threat or local testing was conducted. Now, the authorities want to ensure that the system works correctly throughout the country.
What is important to know: if a message does not arrive on your phone, it does not necessarily mean a system failure. The reason may be device settings, lack of necessary software updates, or technical limitations of a specific smartphone model.
The State Fire and Rescue Service expects that the warning will be received by the majority of the country's residents.
The test will also allow for an assessment of the system's readiness for use in real emergency situations.
In recent months, the importance of such alert tools has significantly increased. Residents of Latvia have repeatedly received emergency messages through the Cell Broadcast system due to incidents involving drones and other potential threats.
The service emphasizes that there is no cause for concern. No additional actions are required from residents.
If you hear sirens or receive an alert message on your smartphone this morning, it will only mean that a scheduled test of the civil security system is being conducted.
The test will conclude a few minutes after it begins, and the received message can simply be closed.
