On June 1, 2026, the Day of the Spirit is celebrated. This holiday is movable. It is always celebrated the day after Trinity and on the 51st day after Easter, and always falls on a Monday.
What is remembered in the Church on June 1, 2026
Immediately after Holy Trinity, the feast of the Holy Spirit is celebrated. It reminds us that on Trinity Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended upon the 12 apostles.
As a result, they received amazing abilities and immediately began to speak in many languages, allowing them to preach in various countries. This became the point of birth for the Church. On this day, special attention is given to the Holy Trinity as such.
It is characteristic of Orthodoxy to remember the “secondary,” yet most important character of the previous day after the Great Feasts. The same goes for Trinity.
For the first time, this day was referred to as the day of the Holy Spirit in monastic typicons in the 9th century. On this day, a special canon to the Holy Spirit, written by St. Theophan, is sung during the service.
In the 14th century, this day was called Trinity Day, and the icon of the day was “The Trinity” by Andrei Rublev. Then, in the 17th century, the name was transferred to the previous day, and this day began to be called the Descent of the Holy Spirit.
The meaning of the holiday
The “main characters” of the Trinity are remembered — God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The apostles' faith in them became the foundation of our faith.
Traditions of the service
The service of this day is similar to the services of “nautry” (that is, the days following the feast) of the two other highest-status Lord's twelve feasts — the Nativity of Christ and Theophany.
