With the first warm days, pests of nightshade crops emerge from the soil to the surface. Agronomist Andrey Tumanov explained how to meet uninvited guests fully armed and save the first sprouts.

Hungry Emergence

As soon as the soil warms up to stable positive temperatures, the main enemy of the gardener makes its presence known. The Colorado potato beetle, having successfully overwintered at depths of up to half a meter, emerges in search of food. There is no time to delay, as the young, tender shoots of early potatoes that have just sprouted are an enticing target for the awakened pest.

It is better to take protective measures before the insects start to reproduce actively. The expert notes: “The Colorado potato beetle is a perfect machine for destroying crops. It wakes up angry and very hungry. If you miss the first week after its emergence, the striped invaders will destroy the young plants to the ground, and the potatoes will take a long time to recover, which will affect the timing and volume of the harvest.”

Fake Buffet: Luring the Enemy with Bait

While the potato tops are still small and it is inconvenient to collect the beetles by hand, Andrey Tumanov recommends outsmarting the pest by setting traps for it. This time-tested method allows for minimizing the population even before they reach the beds. The head of the public organization shares the secret of effective hunting:

“Take ordinary potato peels or cut a couple of old, unfit tubers into pieces. Scatter these baits in small piles around the perimeter of the future potato field directly on the bare ground. The beetles, driven by hunger, will come from all around to this buffet. You will only need to walk around the areas with a bucket once a day, collect the pests, and destroy them.”

To enhance the effect, the potato pieces can be soaked in a strong solution of urea for a day. After trying such a treat, the beetle dies on its own right at the bait, which spares the gardener from unnecessary troubles.

Biological Weapons Against Larvae

If the beetle has managed to reach the sprouted bushes, it is not necessary to use heavy chemical insecticides. Modern chemicals can cause the pest to become resistant, while natural methods remain effective and safe. Andrey Tumanov urges to rely on biological preparations and folk remedies.

The gardener explains: “Dusting the bushes with ordinary sifted wood ash or corn flour in the morning dew works wonderfully. When wet, the flour swells in the stomach of the beetle and its larvae, causing their death. From ready-made products, choose biological preparations like ‘Fitoverm’ or ‘Bitoxibacillin’. They hit the target precisely but are absolutely safe for bees, pets, and humans.”

A solution of ordinary mustard with added table vinegar also has an excellent repellent effect. This solution is sprayed on the foliage once a week. The striped guests cannot stand the sharp smell and leave the treated beds alone, allowing the harvest to be unharmed.
