On May 23, 2026, one of the 12 closest disciples of Jesus — Apostle Simon is remembered. He was nicknamed the Zealot for his zealous adherence to the Jewish law. He was also called the Canaanite because he was from Cana of Galilee.
This saint is considered the patron of marriage because during the sacrament of Marriage, a passage about the wedding at Cana of Galilee is read, where Simon witnessed the miracle performed by Jesus and followed Him.
What is Remembered in the Church on May 23, 2026
Simon was a contemporary of Jesus and was born in Cana of Galilee. He became a disciple of Jesus and followed Him after Christ performed the first miracle described in the Gospel in his house — turning water into wine at the request of the Virgin Mary during a wedding to quench the thirst of all the guests. Like the other apostles on Pentecost, he received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
After that, he actively preached, having traveled to Judea, Egypt, Libya, Cyrene, and even Britain. He met a martyr's death, likely reaching the shores of the Caucasus, probably in the territory of modern Abkhazia. He is buried in the city of Nicopolis (either New Athos in Abkhazia or Novomikhailovskoye in the Krasnodar Krai). His relics are currently kept under the altar in the Simon-Canaanite Church in New Athos, while two other parts are in Cologne and the Vatican.
