In several municipalities in Latgale, the first part of the physics exam for high school students was canceled on Wednesday following warnings of a possible threat to airspace. Students will be able to take the exam later — on an additional day.

Warnings of a possible threat to airspace in Latgale have affected the operation of schools and the conduct of centralized exams for the second consecutive day.

On Wednesday, the first part of the physics exam at the optimal and advanced levels was canceled in the Kraslava, Ludza, and Rezekne regions, as well as in the city of Rezekne.

According to the State Education Development Agency (VIAA), the exam was scheduled to start at 10:00, but even before it began, residents of the region received alerts through the cellular notification system.

As a result, it was decided not to hold the first part of the exam. Students will be able to take it on a reserve day — July 2.

As for the second part of the exam, students and parents were urged to monitor information from local governments and further instructions from the authorities.

On Wednesday, the second part of the Latvian language exam for 9th-grade students is also taking place.

The situation is a continuation of events from Tuesday when residents of several regions in Latgale and Vidzeme received warnings about a possible threat to airspace. At that time, the first part of the Latvian language exam for ninth-graders had to be interrupted in ten municipalities.

Importantly, authorities have not yet confirmed that drones have indeed entered Latvian airspace. However, security services continue to respond to potential threats with maximum caution.

Amid the increasing frequency of warnings, the consequences for everyday life are becoming more noticeable — from the operation of transport and schools to the conduct of state exams.

In recent days, the authorities of Latvia have already begun discussing a possible revision of response algorithms to such situations in order to minimize the impact of alerts on the lives of residents in the future.
