The Riga municipality reminded parents of future first-graders: applications for enrolling a child in the first grade of capital schools can be submitted until May 15. At the same time, the municipality detailed how the enrollment of children for the next academic year will take place and who will receive priority in admission.
As explained by the council, children who are not only seven years old but also six years old, if they turn seven during this calendar year, are given priority for school enrollment. Parents can register their child for admission to the first grade in advance, starting from the age of five.
After the application submission period ends, schools will begin to form lists of candidates for the first grades. This will use information registered in the State Information System of Education by May 15. The class formation is planned to be completed by June 1.
This year, special attention is again given to the territorial principle. Priority in enrollment will be given to children who have been declared at the address related to the territory of a specific school for at least 12 months with one of their parents.
In addition, preference is provided for:
- orphaned children;
- children of teachers from the respective school;
- siblings of students already studying at this school under the basic education program.
The municipality emphasizes that schools will be required to inform parents about the results of the application review. Within five working days after the formation of the candidate lists, parents will receive an electronic notification — to the official electronic address or e-mail — regarding whether their child is included in the enrollment list. Schools will start sending notifications from May 18.
Information about the territorial assignment of schools can be found by parents on the IKSD Riga website in the "Katalogs" section.
