A fake news article about allegedly planned social routes in an eastern direction was published on the hacked website "Rēzeknes satiksme".
On Tuesday, the website of the municipal company "Rēzeknes satiksme" was hacked, where a fake news article was published about allegedly planned social routes in an eastern direction, according to information on the Rēzekne municipality's website.
The fake message stated that regular bus routes from Rēzekne to Vitebsk, Minsk, Pskov, Smolensk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg would be launched in the near future.
The fake news also indicated that a special "social tariff" would be applied to these routes and that additional information about the schedule and advance ticket sales would follow in the coming days.
"Rēzeknes satiksme" stated that they did not publish such a message, did not plan the mentioned routes, and neither the Rēzekne City Council nor the municipal enterprise made any decisions regarding the organization of such transport or the application of a "social tariff".
Furthermore, a decision allegedly made by the council was attached to the fake news. The municipality confirms that no council meeting was held on the date indicated in the attachment, and there is also no decision with the specified number.
The municipality will inform the responsible authorities about the incident to assess what happened and prevent further dissemination of misleading information.
Currently, the "Rēzeknes satiksme" website is not operational.
Julia Jurane, a specialist in the Public Relations Department of the State Police, informed the LETA agency that no report has been filed with the police at this time, while the State Police has contacted the Rēzekne municipality regarding this event.
