On May 13, 2026, the memory of the oldest of the 12 apostles — Apostle James is honored. He was the only one of the disciples whose death is mentioned in the New Testament.
In the folk tradition, this day is called Jacob the Warm. The reason is that usually by this day, after prolonged cold, warm weather arrives. This day also marks the Afterfeast of the Mid-Pentecost — a milestone that signifies the midpoint between Easter and Pentecost.
What is Remembered in the Church on May 13, 2026
James the son of Zebedee lived in the 1st century and was, like all the other apostles, a contemporary of Christ. He led a simple life as a fisherman. Then, along with his brother John the Theologian, after hearing the Christian preaching, he became a disciple of Jesus and followed him.
He was among the three disciples (the other two being his brother John and Peter) who were taken by Him to Mount Tabor, where He revealed His purpose to them, and then, just before His arrest, was with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. After the execution of Jesus and His Resurrection, he preached in Spain and other countries, and then returned to Jerusalem. There, he openly rebuked the Pharisees and scribes, and no one could withstand his speeches. Then his opponents slandered James before King Herod Agrippa, who ordered the apostle to be seized. He was tortured, but James showed incredible courage.
Then one of the informers named Isaiah repented, and when James was being led to execution, he threw himself at his feet in repentance. The apostle embraced him and said, "Peace be with you and forgiveness." And Isaiah was executed along with James. This happened in 44 AD.
Currently, the relics of the apostle are kept in the Cathedral of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. A 200-kilometer pilgrimage route leads to it, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
