In January of this year, 35 initial applications for international protection were submitted in Latvia by citizens of other countries, which is three times more than in January 2025, according to information compiled by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
The most - 25 - such applications have been submitted by residents of Tajikistan. Five applications each have also been received from citizens of Russia and Belarus.
An application for international protection can be requested by a person who has left their homeland and believes that they face serious danger there - persecution, human rights violations, war - and who is seeking safety in another country.
