Today, Labor Day is celebrated in Latvia and around the world, reports LETA.

Labor Day is celebrated annually in many countries around the world, and on this day, various issues relevant to modern workers are typically raised.

The National Encyclopedia states that in 1886, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States demanded the introduction of an eight-hour workday, which was to take effect on May 1, 1886. This demand escalated into a general strike in Chicago and clashes with the police, resulting in fatalities. The eight-hour workday was implemented, and May 1 was first celebrated as an international day of unity and solidarity among workers in 1890, following its proclamation at the first international congress of socialist parties in Europe, held in Paris on July 14, 1889.

On this day, demonstrations with protest slogans against low wages and unsatisfactory working conditions, as well as government austerity policies or high unemployment rates, take place in many countries. The scale and themes of the demonstrations vary depending on the pressing issues of the specific year.

The first Labor Day events in Latvia took place in 1893 in Liepaja.

In Latvia, there are streets named May 1 in at least 13 settlements, with May 1 squares in Varaklani and Skrunda, and a May 1 avenue in Ogre.
