From today, fishermen are again allowed to go fishing from boats, reported LETA agency by the head of the public relations department of the State Environmental Service, Aija Jalinska.

The service reminds that a number of restrictions are still in place this spring. They concern both specific species of fish and fishing gear, as well as certain bodies of water throughout Latvia.

Until May 15, it is prohibited to keep zander (also known as "forest vimba") in the catch, and fishing for pikeperch with the right to keep it is prohibited until May 31. Also, until May 31, fishing using fishing traps (fyke nets) is prohibited throughout the country, and nets cannot be used for any type of fishing in all bodies of water until June 15.

From today until May 31, fishing is prohibited in the Bullupe River along its entire length, in the Daugava River — in a section six kilometers long from the mouth in the Gulf of Riga upstream to the former high-voltage transmission line in Riga, in the Locu Canal, in Sarkandaugava, as well as in Aiviekste — from the mouth of the Veseta (new channel) upstream to the Aiviekste Hydroelectric Power Station dam.

The ban on entering Lake Pape by boat remains in effect until June 1, which simultaneously means a ban on fishing from boats in this body of water.

Also, until May 31, there is a ban on fishing in certain places on the Lielupe River and in the Lielupe basin, namely: in the Lielupe from the bridge in Stalgene upstream to the confluence of the Musa and Memele rivers below the ruins of Bauska Castle, in the Memele — from the mouth to the pedestrian bridge in Bauska, in the Musa — from the mouth to the bridge near the motorsport complex; in Sloce (Pulkaini) between Lake Valgums and Lake Kaniers, in Vecslocene and Sloce between Lake Sloka and the Lielupe.

From this year, fishermen are required to register and report on the website www.makskeresanaskarte.lv data on the catch of certain species of fish in the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga — eel, cod, salmon, herring, sprat, and flounder.

The service urges before going fishing to ensure that licensed fishing has not been introduced in a specific body of water, which is an additional procedure and may differ from the general one. A list of such places is available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture in the "Fishing" section.

Violations of fishing rules, crayfish catching, and underwater hunting, as well as the conditions of licensed fishing, may result in fines ranging from 15 to 350 euros.
