The sunbathing season in Latvia is starting — and even at a “normal” level of ultraviolet radiation, the skin is not yet ready for prolonged sun exposure.
In the coming days, the ultraviolet radiation index in Latvia will rise to 4 — this is considered a normal level for early May. Previously, it was lower than usual due to a denser ozone layer.
The sun is most active from 12 to 3 PM. During this time, it is better to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors or to use sunscreen. At the beginning of the season, it is advised to sunbathe for a very short time and gradually increase the duration.
People with fair skin, freckles, light or red hair, as well as children and those who have already been sunburned should be especially cautious. It is important to protect not only the skin but also the eyes — water and light sand enhance the effect by reflecting sunlight.
According to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, in 2024, Latvia registered 275 cases of melanoma and more than 2700 other types of skin cancer. This is one of the reasons why it is advised to approach the sun with caution even at moderate levels.
