“Honest” photo radars, fair tax, and benefits for dependents. What does the public advocate for?

One loud initiative has already been rejected by the Saeima.

Citizens of Latvia, in their "breaks" between elections, try to influence the political situation and express their will - primarily in legislation. This is particularly evident on the public initiative portal manabalss.lv, where Latvians sign in support of various bills.

Recently, in a short period, more than 17,000 signatures were collected for the initiative allowing residents to choose their savings in the second pension level. However, the Saeima has already rushed to reject this "dangerous" proposal.

It seems that a similar fate awaits the initiative against the parliament's plans to reduce the amount of additional payments for overtime and holiday days. More than 23,000 citizens of Latvia have spoken out against the reduction of these payments.

Very soon, the initiative for a fairer vehicle operation tax will surpass the threshold of 10,000 signatures. This concerns an old idea - the tax is included in the fuel price, thus operating on the principle that those who drive more pay more. Let us remind you that for a proposal "from the people" to be considered by the parliament, it must gather at least 10,000 signatures from adult citizens of Latvia.

Looking at the very new initiatives "from the people," the proposal for honest photo radars deserves attention. The essence of the idea is that the police should "not hide" portable photo radars or unmarked cars equipped with photo radars, but publicly inform drivers about the location of these speed control devices. If, of course, the goal is to prevent traffic accidents and make roads safer, rather than simply filling the treasury.
