The flood threat in Plavinas is assessed with cautious optimism, said Leon Lidums (RL/Latvia's Party) in a conversation with the LETA agency.
Lidums stated that the local government is continuously monitoring the situation, conducting regular inspections of the banks of the Daugava River. The ice on the river has mostly melted, although it still remains in some areas.
According to the head of the local government, the flood threat in the region remains only in Plavinas. The water level in the Daugava is changing, but there is hope that the city will remain unaffected.
For his part, the chairman of the Jekabpils Regional Council, Raivis Ragainis (LZP), noted that Jekabpils can "breathe a sigh of relief" as the ice on the river has melted and the water level is gradually decreasing.
This year, the local government did not need to assist residents, as the population in areas potentially at risk of flooding had prepared in advance for possible emergencies.
