Jomas Street Awaits Changes: Jurmala Prepares to Update Its Main Tourist Street

The Jurmala local government has announced the competition "Creation of the Improvement and Visual Identity of Jomas Street," the LETA agency was informed by the local government.

The Jurmala City Council invites landscape architects, architects, and designers to participate in a sketch project competition to create a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solution for the city's central pedestrian promenade.

The local government notes that Jomas Street is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Latvia — the pedestrian section is crossed by about three million visitors annually. The nearly 1.1-kilometer promenade has developed as the commercial center of Jurmala, featuring cafes, restaurants, ice cream stands, and seasonal entertainment.

At the same time, the local government acknowledges that the layering of decisions made at different times regarding construction and improvement, as well as the varying aesthetics of advertising and signage, have led to the fragmentation of the urban environment.

The goal of the competition is to obtain a modern, visually and spatially high-quality solution for the improvement of the public space of Jomas Street and its visual identity, which will be functional year-round and enhance the attractiveness of Jurmala for both residents and guests, fostering entrepreneurial activity and tourism growth. The jury will evaluate architectural-spatial and landscape quality, functionality and logic of the improvement system, adherence to accessibility and sustainability principles, as well as the quality of visual identity and design recommendations.

The total prize fund for the competition is 10,000 euros.

Sketch projects can be submitted to the Jurmala Cultural Space and Environmental Design Center in Dubulti no later than 16:00 on June 10.
