It was announced when sorting and separate collection of organic waste will be mandatory in Riga

Starting from March 1, 2027, mandatory separation of paper, plastic, and metal waste, as well as mandatory separate collection of organic waste into separate containers, will be introduced in Riga, according to the mandatory waste disposal rules adopted by the Riga City Council on Thursday.

Opposition deputies opposed the mandatory separate collection of biological waste, believing that it will lead to additional costs for residents.

The rules stipulate that containers for organic waste will be mandatory in both apartment buildings and individual houses. Homeowners who engage in composting on their property will be able to opt out of this requirement.

Home composting will be allowed in enclosed courtyards of apartment buildings, provided certain requirements are met.

The minimum collection frequency will be once every eight weeks for unsorted, paper, plastic, and glass waste, and no less than once every four weeks for organic waste.

Starting from March 1, 2027, waste management organizations will be required to wash and disinfect containers at established intervals without additional charges.

Managers of apartment buildings will have to regularly inform residents about the waste collection schedule, sorting, and disposal costs, including in bills and on information boards.
