The harsh winter of 2026 with significant snow and ice thickness in many regions of Latvia has created conditions that may lead to large-scale and dangerous floods with potentially high water levels, the Ministry of Agriculture reported.
According to the ministry, in the case of a rapid thaw, the situation may significantly worsen due to the melting of a thick snow cover, which will temporarily create large water masses, potentially leading to a rapid rise in water levels, flooding of floodplains and other low-lying areas.
Additionally, ice and debris carried by the current may cause blockages, damage to transport structures and water passage pipes, flooding of crops, residential and agricultural buildings.
The Ministry of Agriculture reminds landowners of the need to check ditches, reservoirs, and water passage pipes under roads and to take preventive measures before flooding - ensuring that they are not clogged or obstructed.
