January's record cold is now seriously reflected in our heating bills — everyone has to pay a lot: both those who heat with pellets (their price has risen) and those who use gas or electricity.
Many people are posting their bills on social media and comparing them with others. The same was done by Andris Kulbergs, the chairman of the parliamentary commission investigating the rise in heating costs in Riga.
"Rīgas Siltums" reported that heat consumption in January increased by 60–80% compared to December. With the heating tariff rising (from 74 euros to 83 euros per MWh) and with consumption effectively doubled, heating bills turned out to be extremely high. Starting from February 10, residents began receiving bills for January.
The cold winter significantly increased heat consumption. Please send your heating bills for January 2025 and January 2026 to the email (pik-siltums@saeima.lv) — anonymity is guaranteed.
"I am shocked by my January electricity bill of 754 euros — it seems that my decision to be responsible and 'green' by heating my home with a heat pump was foolish (the bill in January 2025 was 563 euros). This amount includes all electricity, including charging my electric vehicle. With my salary, I can pay, but for most residents, heating bills this winter are becoming unbearable. Examples of your bills will be very helpful for the work of the commission I lead investigating the activities of 'Rīgas Siltums' in the Saeima."
