Attendance at kindergartens has been declining for the fourth week

Attendance at Latvian preschool educational institutions has been declining for the fourth consecutive week, according to monitoring data from the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), reports LETA.

Last week, preschools were attended by an average of 66% of children, which is 2.2 percentage points lower than the week before. A significant decrease in attendance was recorded in Liepaja and the Jekabpils region — by 9.6 and 7.1 percentage points, respectively.

Last week, the lowest share of preschool attendance from the number of registered children was in Daugavpils — kindergartens were attended by 56.8% of children. The highest attendance was recorded in Riga — 70.2%, although a decrease of 0.3 percentage points was also registered compared to the previous week.

Attendance at preschools decreased in eight out of ten municipalities included in the monitoring. In Rezekne and the Gulbene region, the attendance rate has remained unchanged for two weeks.

In general education institutions, the average attendance was 86.6%, which is 0.6 percentage points lower than the week before. The lowest attendance was registered in the Jekabpils region — 78.7%. In the Liepaja region, attendance increased by 4.5 percentage points — to 92.3%.

The decrease in attendance in general education institutions can be partially explained by the holidays for first-grade students.

A total of 62 general education and preschool institutions in Daugavpils, the Gulbene region, Jelgava, the Jekabpils region, Jurmala, Liepaja, Rezekne, Riga, the Valmiera region, and Ventspils are included in the monitoring.

Educational institutions report attendance every week as of Thursday.
