In Latvia, 28% of people live on a 'hope for the best' basis - survey

In Latvia, 28% of the population lives in uninsured housing, and 9% do not know if their housing is insured, according to the survey results.

According to the survey, the most common concern among people is the risk of fire, cited in 57% of cases. In 43% of cases, respondents are worried about water leaks, which can be caused by, for example, burst pipes or damaged household appliances. This is followed by damage from storms and bad weather (23%), damage from neighbors (17%), and thefts (13%).

When asked about home insurance, 28% of respondents indicated that the house or apartment they currently live in is not insured. This includes 26% of families with children under 18 living in uninsured homes.

The survey results show that the highest share of uninsured properties in Latvian regions is in Latgale, where 35.5% of homes are uninsured. In Kurzeme, 35.3% of homes are uninsured, in Zemgale - 32.2%, in Vidzeme - 27.7%, and in Riga - 22.6% of homes.

63% of respondents said their homes are insured, while 9% do not know if their house or apartment is insured. According to BTA, this indicates that a portion of the population does not have a clear understanding of insurance.

The survey was conducted in January 2026 by the agency 'Norstat Latvija'. It involved 1,000 residents of Latvia aged 18 to 74.
