Considering that the planned changes to restrict remote learning will only affect current students in grades 1 and 2, it is estimated by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) that about 210 remote learning students and 24 homeschooled students may return to in-person education.
According to the ministry, there are currently about 12,500 students studying remotely in Latvia, most of whom are in secondary school. Nearly 3,600 students are receiving remote education in primary school. 81 students are being homeschooled.
At the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year, 16 out of 583 Latvian educational institutions implementing basic education programs for grades 1-9 will offer remote learning programs. Most of them - ten - implement remote learning programs for grades 1-6.
As previously reported, on January 22, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Education Law that significantly restrict access to remote learning for students in the first stage of basic education - from grades 1 to 6, but President Edgars Rinkēvičs returned them to the Saeima for reconsideration.
On Thursday, parliamentarians referred the amendments to the Saeima Committee on Education, Culture, and Science. Proposals can be submitted until February 10.
