The previous nuclear arms limitation agreement has expired.
U.S. President Donald Trump is calling for a new nuclear weapons treaty with Russia. This was reported today by the German tabloid BILD.
The old nuclear weapons treaty "New START" between the U.S. and Russia expired today as the last major agreement on nuclear disarmament. Thus, for the first time in several decades, there are no mandatory restrictions on the nuclear arsenals of the two largest nuclear powers in the world.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on his platform Truth Social that the United States is the "most powerful country in the world." During his first term, he completely restructured the armed forces, including the production of many new and modernized nuclear weapons. He referred to the previous START treaty as a "poorly negotiated agreement." Instead of extending it, Trump demanded that nuclear experts work on a new, better, and modern treaty that would be effective in the long term.
After the expiration of the agreement, Russia stated that it no longer feels bound by the previous restrictions on its nuclear arsenal. At the same time, Moscow emphasized that it would act "responsibly," but warned of "decisive countermeasures" in the event of a threat to Russia's security.
