This year, it is planned to transfer inmates from the Jelgava and Daugavpils prisons to the new Liepaja Prison, the Prison Administration (UML) reported.

For security reasons, more detailed information cannot be provided.

This week, 166 inmates were transferred from the former Liepaja Prison to the new Liepaja Prison. Approximately 150 staff members are working at the new prison, which corresponds to the current number of inmate places. With an increase in the number of inmates, the staff will also be increased, the Prison Administration (UML) explained.

The facilities and infrastructure of the new prison are operational, and inmates are provided with heating, water supply, and food.

UML also reports that the former building of the Liepaja Prison on Darza Street is planned to be auctioned. The Ministry of Justice has concluded that the building is not needed for the functions of the ministry or its subordinate institutions. The Liepaja City Council has also decided that the property is not required for the autonomous functions of the municipality.

The ministry plans to submit a proposal for the alienation of the state-owned enterprise "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi," after which the process of selling the property will be organized.

As reported, the new Liepaja Prison on Alsungas Street, 29, began operations on Tuesday.

The new Liepaja Prison is designed to accommodate 1,200 inmates. The complex consists of six buildings, with a total area of 305,116 square meters and approximately 37,400 square meters of premises.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mikhail Papsuievich, previously stated that after the opening of the new Liepaja Prison, the Jelgava Prison and the Griva branch of the Daugavgriva Prison could also be closed.
