In January, electricity prices in Latvia soared - up 83%

In January, the average electricity price in the trading zone of Latvia increased by 83.1% compared to December of last year, amounting to €153.5 per megawatt-hour (MWh), reports JSC "Augstsprieguma tīkls" (AST).

In Estonia, the price increased 2.1 times to €154.51 per MWh, while in Lithuania it rose by 82% to €152.53 per MWh.

In the Baltic countries overall, the average electricity price in January compared to December of last year increased by 91% - to €153.51 per MWh.

In turn, compared to January 2025, the electricity price in Latvia was 67.2% higher.

The rise in electricity prices in the Baltics and connected areas was primarily caused by low air temperatures, which contributed to increased consumption, resulting in prices being determined by more expensive production sources. At the same time, the capacities in both the Baltics and connected areas were sufficient.

Electricity imports to the Baltic countries in January decreased by 13.3% compared to December of last year. Compared to December, imports from Poland increased 3.3 times, while imports from Sweden decreased by 7.1%, and from Finland by 21.9%.

AST notes that changes in electricity prices directly affect only those consumers who use electricity at market prices.
