In the second half of this week, it will get warmer in Latvia and it will snow, but on Sunday, the air temperature will start to drop again, and the next week, as forecasters predict, will be cold, writes LETA.
On the night of Thursday, February 5, the thermometer in some eastern parts of the country will drop again to -24 degrees. During the day, clouds will cover the sky from the south, and light snow is expected in several areas, with temperatures rising to -7 to -12 degrees.
On Friday and Saturday, the air will warm up to -3 to -8 degrees, with snow falling in most regions, and a weak easterly wind. It is expected that the most precipitation will fall in Latgale, where the snow cover may increase by ten centimeters.
According to current forecasts, on Sunday morning, the air temperature in most parts of the country will drop to -13 to -18 degrees, and in the first half of the following week, frost is again possible in several regions of Latvia — especially in the eastern areas — with temperatures dropping to -20 to -25 degrees.
According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the next week in Latvia will be six to seven degrees colder than normal, while at the end of February and in March, temperatures may return to normal, that is, to the average for the period 1991–2020.
This month may become the coldest February since 2018 or even 2012, and the winter as a whole may be the coldest in the last 13 or 15 years.
It was previously reported that Latvia experienced the coldest January since 2010 and the second coldest after the record-breaking frosty January of 1987. However, this January was only the 15th coldest since observations began 102 years ago.
