On Monday, by 5 a.m., the cold record for February 2 was broken at ten meteorological stations and Riga Airport, including a national record, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LCSGM), writes LETA.
The lowest air temperature at night was -31.7 degrees in Stalgene, where the "Jelgava" meteorological station is located. The previous cold record for February 2 in Latvia was -30.8 degrees, recorded in 2012 in Zoseni.
It should be noted that the cold records on February 2 are less extreme compared to other dates at the beginning of the month. For example, the record for February 1 in Latvia is -41.1 degrees, and on February 8 and for the entire year — -43.2 degrees; both were registered in Daugavpils in 1956.
Local temperature records were broken on Monday not only in Jelgava but also at meteorological stations in Bauska, Dagda, Daugavpils, Dobele, Liepaja, Pavilosta, Rucava, Skriveri, and Stende.
These are the first broken temperature records in Latvia this year, as well as the first cold records since August of last year.
At five in the morning, the air temperature in the LCSGM observation network ranged from -10.6 degrees in Kolka and -14 degrees in Madona to -29.3 degrees at the meteorological station in Daugavpils and -31 degrees in Stalgene.
According to "Latvijas Valsts ceļi", the lowest temperature before five in the morning was -29 degrees in several places in Zemgale and southwestern Vidzeme.
In the east of the country, the morning was on average warmer than in the central and western parts of Latvia, as a weak northern wind was blowing and the sky was partly overcast. At the same time, in Lithuania, the frost reached 34 degrees in places.
Air quality ranged from good to moderate. Mist and hoarfrost were observed in places.
In Riga — clear skies, a light wind or complete calm, with air temperatures around -20 degrees in the city center and up to -26 degrees in the suburbs. At Riga Airport, with a temperature of -25 degrees, the record for February 2, 2012, was broken when the thermometer showed -23.8 degrees.
Also, at the airports of Liepaja and Ventspils, the frost reached 25 degrees at night.
The maximum air temperature on Sunday in the LCSGM observation network ranged from -8.4 degrees in Kolka to -17.6 degrees in Dagda.
The highest air temperature in Europe on February 1 was recorded in Spain and Greece — +20 degrees, and in Cyprus — +22 degrees. The lowest temperature at night on Monday was -34 degrees in Lithuania and Finland, and -37 degrees in northern Russia.
On Monday, the sun will shine, and the wind will strengthen in the Gulf of Riga
On Monday, predominantly sunny weather is expected in Latvia, meteorologists predict, writes LETA.
The day will be more overcast in the eastern part of the country, where light snow is possible.
A weak northern wind will blow, with gusts reaching 16 meters per second in the Gulf of Riga after noon. Under the influence of the wind, ice accumulations will begin to form in the southern part of the bay; on Tuesday and in the following days, the ice will move towards the Kurzeme coast.
The northern wind will bring slightly warmer air — during the day on Monday, the temperature will rise to -9..-14 degrees, on the coast and in northern Kurzeme — to -5..-8 degrees.
In Riga, sunny and dry weather is expected. Throughout the day, the northern wind will strengthen, and in the evening, gusts of up to 16 meters per second are expected on the coast of the bay. The air will warm up to -6 degrees.
The weather is determined by an anticyclone, while a cyclone is located in Russia. Atmospheric pressure at sea level ranges from 1022 hPa in eastern Latgale to 1029 hPa in Northern Kurzeme.
