The air temperature has dropped to −26 degrees in some places

On Friday at 6:00, the air temperature in Latvia ranged from −6 degrees at Cape Kolka and −7 degrees in Mersrags to −25…−26 degrees in some areas of Latgale and Vidzeme. This is the strongest frost in the country this winter season, according to data from meteorological observation stations.

According to the information from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC), the lowest temperature recorded at six in the morning was in Zoseni — −22 degrees, while at the meteorological station in Daugavpils it was −26.4 degrees. Meanwhile, according to 'Latvijas Valsts ceļi', the strongest frost at 6:00 was −25 degrees on the A2 highway near the Amata River.

In most parts of the country, thermometers show temperatures between −16 and −21 degrees. By nine in the morning, the frost is expected to intensify in many areas.

The sky is mostly clear, with a light to moderate eastern and northeastern wind. The air quality ranges from good to satisfactory.

The snow cover thickness at LVĢMC observation stations ranges from 6–7 centimeters in Kolka, Mersrags, Daugavgriva, Ainazi, and Ruijene to 35 centimeters in Piedruja in the Kraslava region and 44 centimeters in Dagda.

In Riga, the morning is clear, with the air temperature dropping to −15 degrees, and in some suburban areas to −20 degrees. An eastern wind is blowing at a speed of 3–4 meters per second.

The maximum air temperature on Thursday in the LVĢMC observation network ranged from −5.0 degrees in Pavilošta, Ventspils, and Kolka to −11.2 degrees in Alūksne.

The highest air temperature in Europe on January 29 reached +24 degrees in southeastern Spain. The lowest temperature on Friday night was −35 degrees in some areas of Scandinavia and Finland, as well as −39 degrees in northern Russia.
