The South of Latgale is covered with a layer of snow up to 45 centimeters thick

The thickest snow cover in Latvia in the last three years has formed in the south of Latgale, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LCSGM), reports LETA.

On Thursday morning, the snow depth was 34 centimeters in Daugavpils, 36 centimeters in Piedruja, and 45 centimeters in Dagda. This is the highest figure recorded at the country's meteorological stations since 2023, when on March 13 in Priekuļi the snow depth reached 59 centimeters.

At other meteorological stations, the snow depth varies from 6–7 centimeters in Kolka, Mērsrags, Daugavgrīva, Ainaži, and Rujiena to 29 centimeters in Rucava and 33 centimeters in Rožupe (Līvan County).

The sky over Latvia is gradually clearing, with light snow falling in several places. Snowdrifts are forming — the wind is slightly blowing the freshly fallen snow. A moderate northeast wind is blowing. The air quality is good.

The air temperature is dropping: at 5 AM it ranged from -6.8 degrees in Ventspils to -12.6 degrees in Rēzekne.

In Riga early in the morning, it is cloudy with light snow, the air temperature is -10 degrees, and the east-northeast wind is blowing at 4–6 meters per second, with gusts up to 11 meters per second. The snow depth at the meteorological station in the city center is 16 centimeters.

The maximum air temperature on Wednesday in the LCSGM observation network ranged from -4.5 degrees in Ventspils to -10.3 degrees in Alūksne.

The highest air temperature in Europe on January 28 was around +20 degrees in southern Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece. The lowest air temperature on the night of Thursday was recorded in the mountain valleys of Norway — minus 38 degrees.
